Garden Concert is a long poem written after the author experienced a live concert on the grounds of Whitehern, a Victorian mansion now a museum in the city of Hamilton, Ontario. The music was provided by the Hamilton Wind Quintet, consisting of flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and French horn. The poem is divided into five sections of twelve lines each to mirror the five instruments of the quintet; it is introduced by the ‘overture” of six lines and closed by a similar “coda” of six lines. The thematic structure also deals with five separate but interrelated aspects of the complete experience. These are:
a) Wind (including aspects of the weather such as temperature, humidity) b) Sunlight (along with shade and the patterns produced) c) People (the performers and the audience) d) Nature (birds, insects, flowers) e) Music
