This young adult coming-of-age story will appeal to readers who love interesting female characters, plot lines with lots of intrigue and mystery, and tales that move through a variety of locations.
The teenage heroine, Kathleen Dunkley, moves to Toronto from “up north” as a result of personal tragedies. There she is befriended by Walker T Robinson, a Jamaican who rents rooms to two women in their 20s. When one of the renters learns she has inherited money and a piece of property in Jamaica near Montego Bay, the three young women, plus Walker T, launch into an adventure – one that includes a haunted plantation house, a voodoo-practising “witch”, and an eerie “presence” that seems to follow Kathleen everywhere she goes.
The story is an example of well-researched historical fiction, full of imagination and attention to descriptive details.
What people are saying about this book:
“You don’t need to go to Jamaica … You will see, taste, smell, hear – and quite possibly fear – Jamaica in this rich, heartfelt and … spooky … tale.” – Joe Mahoney, author and CBC director
